Loneliness affects nearly 1 in 4 young adults aged 18–29, despite living in the most digitally connected era. It's time to rethink how we build, and role model, real connection—and mentorship is a powerful place to start.
Despite endless ways to connect online, 24% of young adults aged 18–29 report frequent or constant loneliness. That’s nearly 1 in 4—down from a pandemic high of 38%, but still alarmingly high. Technology, while useful, often isolates. We attend virtual classes and meetings alone, create content in solitude, and cling to our phones for comfort. Even social gaming—headset on, controller in hand—can trap us in hours of sedentary play and keep us disconnected from our physical surroundings and the people nearby.
This paradox—digital connection through social isolation—leaves many young people feeling lost, searching for genuine connection, meaning and purpose. That’s where mentorship matters. A mentor can help guide someone out of isolation into community and help expand comfort zones.
I'll be expanding my own comfort zone as I aim to role model the good that comes from growth. I'm getting my dancing shoes ready to learn new steps and I'll see you from the dance floor!
Will you help support young adults through mentorship and connection?
